If you have ever stood in front of two air conditioners with different price tags and wondered why one costs so much more, you are not alone. A big part of that price gap comes down to a single number: the SEER rating. It sounds technical, and honestly, the way it gets thrown around can make it more confusing than it needs to be.

We wrote this guide to clear that up. By the end, you will know what a SEER rating actually means, how to find it on your own unit, and what level makes sense for a home right here in Timmins, where the cooling season is short and the winters are long.

What a SEER Rating Actually Means

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. In plain terms, it measures how much cooling an air conditioner gives you compared to how much electricity it uses over a whole cooling season.

Here is a simple way to think about it. A car’s fuel economy tells you how far you can drive on a litre of gas. A SEER rating does the same thing for cooling. A higher SEER number means the unit produces more cooling for every unit of electricity it burns. So a higher number equals better efficiency and lower running costs.

The math behind it takes the total cooling output over a season, measured in BTUs, and divides it by the total electricity used. You do not need to run that calculation yourself. You just need to remember the golden rule: higher SEER means more efficient.

SEER vs SEER2: What Changed in 2023

Starting January 1, 2023, the industry switched from SEER to SEER2. This was not a marketing gimmick. It was a change in how equipment gets tested.

The old testing method used gentle lab conditions that did not reflect how systems really run in a home. The new SEER2 method uses an updated procedure called the M1 test, which raises the air pressure the fan has to push against. That is closer to the reality of a home with real ductwork, especially older houses where ducts are not perfect.

Because the new test is tougher, SEER2 numbers come out a bit lower than the old SEER numbers for the same equipment. The unit did not get worse. The test just got more honest. A rough conversion is to multiply an old SEER number by about 0.95 to estimate the SEER2 value. So a unit rated 16 SEER lands around 15.2 SEER2.

How SEER Ratings Are Calculated

You will often see ratings listed as “up to” a certain SEER2 value. That wording matters, and here is why.

The rating comes from testing under a set range of conditions. The indoor temperature is held steady while the outdoor temperature is varied from about 65°F up to 104°F to simulate an average cooling season. The result is a seasonal average, not the efficiency you get on any single day.

This means your real-world results depend on things the lab cannot control:

  • How hot and humid your summer actually gets
  • Whether your indoor and outdoor units are properly matched
  • The condition and size of your ductwork
  • How well your home holds temperature

That “up to” number is the ceiling under ideal conditions. What you actually get depends heavily on your home and the quality of the install. We will come back to that point, because it is one of the most important things in this whole guide.

How to Find the SEER Rating on Your Existing AC Unit

A lot of homeowners want to know what they already have before shopping for something new. Good news: it is usually printed right on the equipment. Here is where to look.

  1. Check the yellow EnergyGuide label. Most outdoor units have a bright yellow sticker showing the SEER or SEER2 rating and how it compares to similar models.
  2. Look at the manufacturer nameplate. This is a metal or printed plate on the side of the outdoor condenser. The rating may be listed directly, or you may need to read the model number.
  3. Check your paperwork. The original installation documents, warranty papers, or owner’s manual often list the rating.
  4. Look up the model number. If your unit is older and only shows a model number, write it down along with the serial number. You can search the manufacturer’s website or ask a contractor to look it up for you.

SEER Rating Ranges and What Counts as Good

So what number should you be looking for? Here is a breakdown of the ranges you will run into on the Canadian market, using SEER2 values.

By law, new conventional split-system air conditioners in Canada must meet a minimum of 13.4 SEER2 (specialty small-duct high-velocity and space-constrained systems have slightly lower minimums). Most mainstream residential equipment sits in the 14 to 18 SEER2 band. The highest-efficiency variable-speed systems reach into the low 20s SEER2.

To answer a common question: the highest SEER ratings available today land around 22 to 25 SEER2 for premium residential systems. Those are impressive machines, but as you will see, the highest number is not automatically the smartest buy in our climate.

SEER Ratings and the Timmins Climate

Here is where most online advice falls apart for us. A lot of it is written for hot southern climates where air conditioners run hard for six or seven months a year. That is not our reality.

Timmins is a heating-dominated climate. Our winters are long and brutal, and our cooling season runs roughly three to four months, with only a cluster of truly hot, humid days each summer. That single fact changes everything about how you should think about SEER.

Why? Because SEER only affects your bill when the air conditioner is running. The fewer hours it runs, the less a high SEER number saves you. In a place like Houston, jumping to a premium system pays off fast. In Timmins, that same jump saves far less each year because our cooling hours are much lower.

For most Timmins homes, a system in the 15 to 16 SEER2 range hits the balance point. It clears the legal minimum comfortably, is widely available from every major manufacturer, and avoids the diminishing returns of ultra-premium equipment.

Energy Cost Impact and Payback Period

Let us talk real dollars, because that is what matters.

The savings from higher SEER follow a pattern called diminishing returns. Each step up saves less than the one before it. In moderate climates, upgrading from an old 10 SEER unit to a modern 16 SEER2 might save meaningful money each year. But moving from 16 to 20 SEER2 saves only a small fraction of that.

Now scale that down for Timmins. Because we have far fewer cooling hours than warmer regions, those dollar savings shrink further. Replacing a worn-out old unit with a good mid-range system might save you tens of dollars a year, not hundreds. That is still worthwhile, especially with better comfort and reliability. But paying a big premium for the top-tier number could take longer to pay back than the equipment will even last.

Ontario electricity pricing adds another wrinkle. If you are on a Time-of-Use or Ultra-Low Overnight plan, air conditioners tend to run during the hottest part of the day, which often lands in the pricier mid-peak or on-peak windows, so efficiency matters most exactly when power costs the most. If you are on Tiered pricing, your rate does not change by time of day, and only your total monthly usage matters. Check your bill to see which plan you are on before estimating savings. Even so, the gap between mid-range and premium efficiency stays small in real dollars once you do the math for our climate.

To roughly estimate your own payback, think in these steps:

  1. Find your current unit’s rating and your home’s size in tons.
  2. Estimate how many hot cooling days you actually run the AC.
  3. Compare that against your electricity rate.
  4. Weigh the yearly savings against the price difference between the models.

What About Window AC SEER Ratings?

Window air conditioners play by slightly different rules. Instead of SEER, they are often rated using EER, or Energy Efficiency Ratio. EER measures efficiency at a single fixed condition rather than across a whole season, so the numbers look smaller and do not compare directly to central-system SEER numbers.

Window units make sense when:

  • You only need to cool one or two rooms, like a bedroom
  • You are renting or not ready to invest in a central system
  • Whole-home cooling is not practical for your layout

They fall short when you want even, whole-home comfort or better humidity control. For a full house, a properly sized central system or heat pump almost always does a better job and runs more efficiently overall.

Beyond the Number: Why Installation Quality Matters Most

Here is the part the spec sheets will not tell you. A high SEER rating means nothing if the system is installed poorly.

That “up to” rating assumes everything is done right. In the real world, a top-tier unit can perform worse than a mid-range one if it runs into any of these problems:

  • Oversized equipment that short-cycles, cools unevenly, and fails to pull humidity out of the air
  • Leaky or undersized ductwork that wastes the cooled air before it reaches your rooms
  • Poorly sealed refrigerant lines that bleed away efficiency
  • Mismatched indoor and outdoor components that never hit their rated performance

We see this all the time. A homeowner pays extra for a premium SEER2 number, then loses that advantage to ducts that were never checked. That is why we always say the number on the sticker is only half the story. The install is the other half, and it often matters more.

A Simple Checklist for Choosing the Right SEER Rating

Ready to decide? Run through these questions before you commit to a number.

  • What is your current unit, and how is it holding up? Look up its rating and condition. Whether a new system saves you money depends on that rating, how much you run the AC, your electricity plan, and the replacement cost, not on age alone.
  • How much do you actually run the AC? A few weeks a summer means a mid-range unit is plenty.
  • How is your home’s insulation and air sealing? A tight, well-insulated home needs less cooling, so mid-range efficiency goes further.
  • How long do you plan to stay? Staying for decades tilts slightly toward higher efficiency. Moving soon favors reliable mid-range value.
  • Are you also replacing your heating? If you are looking at a heat pump, heating efficiency becomes the bigger priority.

What to Do vs What Not to Do

Do:

  • Compare SEER2 to SEER2, not SEER to SEER2
  • Aim for around 15 to 16 SEER2 for a standalone AC in most Timmins homes
  • Ask your contractor to check and report on your ductwork
  • Factor in rebates, which exist and can shift the math on higher-efficiency systems

Do not:

  • Assume the highest number is automatically the best value here
  • Buy an oversized unit thinking it cools better, because it does not
  • Ignore installation quality to save a little upfront
  • Compare a window unit’s EER directly to a central system’s SEER2

  • Overpaying for efficiency you will not use. In our short cooling season, the premium tier rarely pays for itself on cooling alone.
  • Underinvesting to save today. Going bottom-of-the-barrel to shave the sticker price can cost more over the life of the unit and leave you uncomfortable in a heat wave.
  • Forgetting the ductwork. The best unit in the world cannot fix a leaky, undersized duct system.
  • Ignoring the whole home. Insulation, air sealing, and a smart thermostat all affect how hard your AC works and how much your SEER rating actually delivers.

The Bottom Line for Timmins Homeowners

A SEER rating is a genuinely useful tool. It tells you how efficiently a system cools, and higher numbers mean lower running costs. But it is one factor among several, not the whole decision.
